• Training Tip – Benefits of endurance training

Slow paced endurance training – also known as long slow distance work – provides more benefit than many athletes realize. Working out in the lower end of your aerobic heart rate range increases the number of cellular mitochondria and capillaries which facilitates the use of oxygen by the body. This helps with performance, since oxygen is your muscles primary fuel source.

Another benefit: Endurance training decreases body weight, which improves running economy, i.e., the amount of oxygen you use, and in turn the amount of effort you expend to maintain a given pace.

Yes, you need higher intensity work (speed drills, hill repeats, etc.) as part of your weekly schedule, but don’t under estimate the value of the slower paced workouts.

    Train smart. Race fast.
