• Training Tip – Climbing on the bike.

When climbing a hill on the bike, you can climb seated or standing. The decision will usually depend upon the grade and length of the hill and the cyclist’s abilities. Climbing seated is usually the more energy efficient way to go, but sometimes you don’t have a choice. Here are a few things to consider. If you are climbing seated, scoot your butt to the back of the saddle. This position will engage the larger muscles in the upper legs and glutes. When you climb standing, stay upright as much as possible to open your chest cavity which will make breathing easier. And position yourself over the nose of the saddle so you are balanced front to rear on the bike. If you lean too far over the handle bars, you reduce the traction of the rear wheel, which reduces your efficiency.

    Train smart. Race fast.
